WHAT IS PRECISION MEDICINE?

Precision medicine is the creation, and adaptation, of a treatment for a disease in order to offer the most effective treatment for one’s disease. Using the patient’s genes, nongenetic personal characteristics, and molecular characteristics of the disease, precision medicine produces the best results while avoiding unnecessary treatments and develops therapies to target specific tumors or specific cellular pathways that lead to tumor growth by identifying the groups of people who will respond best to them [B-I2].

QUOTES

"Because something called precision medicine -- in some cases, people call it personalized medicine -- gives us one of the greatest opportunities for new medical breakthroughs that we have ever seen.  Doctors have always recognized that every patient is unique, and doctors have always tried to tailor their treatments as best they can to individuals.  You can match a blood transfusion to a blood type.  That was an important discovery."
